Jim Harbaugh has finally made the jump back to the NFL and will be the Chargers head coach. That means that one of the top coaching positions in all of football suddenly has an opening. We're going to give you Kamp's Korner's top 5 candidates to replace the national championship coach.
Sherrone Moore (Michigan offensive coordinator and offensive line coach)
Moore seems to be the heavy favorite to be the next Michigan football coach. It makes sense. The players love him and he loves the university. He stepped in amidst the Harbaugh suspensions and beat 2 top 10 teams in Ohio State and Penn State and another ranked team in Iowa. The only concern is his lack of experience. He's never been a head coach, the CEO of a program per say, and nobody knows if he can handle the additional duties in addition to coaching.
Jesse Minter (Michigan defensive coordinator)
This one is very unlikely as he seems like a perfect candidate to fill his current role with the Chargers next season. But bear with me. He was the shot caller for one of the best defensive units in the history of a national power program. He has experience as an assistant in the SEC with Vanderbilt and in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens. There's a lot worse replacements for Harbaugh, that's for sure.
Mike MacDonald (Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator)
I'm actually surprised that I haven't heard this name more. MacDonald came from the Ravens to the Wolverines and transformed and reinvigorated a struggling unit into a well oiled machine. He's now back with the Ravens and is considered one of the top coordinators in the league. In fact, he's getting some interest as an NFL head coach. If he's good enough to be considered a professional head coach in the NFL, I think he should be considered as a candidate in Ann Arbor. MacDonald has experience at the college level at Georgia and Michigan.
PJ Fleck (Minnesota head coach)
Fleck has ties and history on his side as a choice for the job. He's a midwest guy that understands the layout. Fleck was an offensive graduate assistant for Jim Tressel at Ohio State and was the offensive coordinator at Northern Illinois. Fleck made a stop with the Buccaneers as a wide receivers coach. He began his head coaching career at Western Michigan. He took the Broncos from a 1-11 season to a Cotton Bowl birth. Fleck is currently the Minnesota head coach where he's amassed a 50-34 record and has coached the team to 5 bowl game appearances.
Brian Kelly (LSU head coach)
Kelly has been the "what if" name flying around. Nobody REALLY thinks it's going to happen, but what if. He has power program experience and success at Notre Dame and LSU. Kelly has deep roots in the state of Michigan. He was the Grand Valley State University head coach for 13 years with a record 118-35-2. He won 6 conference championships with the Lakers and led them to 2 NCAA Division II Championships. Kelly then turned around a struggling Central Michigan program.
