Genesee Christian played against Morenci at Brighton High School for a trip to the Breslin Center on the line. They showed up playing at an impressive speed and intensity on the defensive end. The Soldiers played stifling defense that rarely, if ever, allowed a good or easy look at the rim. Their offense was patient and effective with great ball movement that made Morenci work very hard on the defensive end. Genesee Christian won the defensive battle by a final score of 31-22.
Both teams played hard and played well and their players deserve all the praise possible for getting there and for their effort last night. We're going to look at some of the players that left an impression on Kamp's Korner.
Haven Chapman (2025, G, Genesee Christian)
I was so impressed with Chapman's play that I ran out of room in her section of my notes. She has a strong frame that's really tough for a high school player to defend. Chapman had the ball in her hands a lot, but she was always quick and decisive with it, never really wasting a dribble. Everything had a purpose. She showed tremendous court vision and she consistently saw over top of the defense and delivered passes over defenders with accuracy. Her highlight pass was a drive and spin with a showtime no look drop off pass for an assist. Chapman has an inside-out dribble that helps here wrong foot defenders. All this talk about her vision and passing, and we haven't even mentioned that she had a 13 point and 11 rebound double-double. She added 5 assists to that stat line as well. Let's do the math. With her points and assists, Chapman had her hand in about 72% of her team's offense.
Alyssa Gibbs (2025, F, Morenci)
Gibbs deserves a lot of accolades for the way she played last night. She battled on both ends of the floor throughout the game. She was consistently comfortable with her back to the basket working off the block. Gibbs would establish position early and hold it when needed in the possession. She showed off a nice finishing move over her left shoulder. Gibbs scored this way at least 3 times in the game. She was a solid screener that held it and gave her teammates some space to handle. Gibbs had a nice pass off the high post as well.
Bella Boike (2026, G, Genesee Christian)
Boike is a very underrated guard. Much like Chapman above, I was incredibly impressed with her court vision, poise and patience. She showed that she could touch the paint with the ball in her hands and make plays for teammates. Boike had a good look from beyond the arc, but was willing to make the extra pass and swing the ball 1 more time on the perimeter. This extra pass led to an assist. She was in constant motion without the ball. Boike was a lockdown perimeter defender that was able to pressure the ball and force opponents to be uncomfortable.
Colbie Ekins (2027, F, Morenci)
Ekins is a talented forward. She scored early off 2 offensive rebounds and a put back bucket on the second. She showed her basketball IQ when she saw her teammate driving, and she sealed her weakside defender so there was no help D available. Ekins was comfortable both facing the rim and playing with her back to the basket. She showed the ability to run the floor when she found a lane on the wing, collected the pass and drew the foul. Ekins converted on both of those free throws.
Madie Houle (2026, G, Genesee Christian)
Houle showed up to play and was critical in Genesee Christian's success. Let's start with her D. Just like her teammates above, she brought energy and effort to that end of the floor. Houle was able to play nose to nose perimeter defense. Offensively, she had 7 points - 2 on a fast break bucket, 2 on a layup off a drop pass and 3 on a catch and shoot triple.
The Genesee Christian student section
Genesee Christian isn't a big school. But I've seen big schools with much smaller student sections traveling for a game. And they weren't there for social hour. The student section was loud and was clearly there in tropical attire to help their classmates advance to the Final 4. I can't wait to see them at the Breslin Center!
