The Super Bowl has become basically a holiday across the country. The Eagles denied the Chiefs a 3rd straight title in a dominating Super Bowl win. It got me thinking. What are some games across high school basketball in Michigan that would have a Super Bowl feel? What are some games that would be sure to have people scheduling their day around? We came up with a couple matchups that would have that big game vibe.
Wayne Memorial vs. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard
This game would feel like a guard convention. Seriously, you could probably build 3 next level backcourts just from this game alone. Let's start with Wayne Memorial. WM has been a bit of a Guard U over the last 5 plus years. McDonalds All American nominee Colleena Bryant. The electric guard can simply control defenses with handles and her explosiveness. Mariah Cross is lightning fast and can really put pressure on opposing defenses. She has one of the most dangerous catch and shoot 3 balls in the state. But Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard's backcourt isn't intimidated by any matchup. They have one of the most poised players you'll ever see at the high school level in Charlotte Miller. Miller is an elite shooter and decision maker with the ball. Vanessa Rodriguez is a top notch 2026 guard. She's an electric shooter that doesn't over dribble and keeps her moves concise. Ava Rodriguez has an exciting mix of handles and shooting. She has the ability to almost see the open shot before it's there and get the ball out quickly.
Fowler v. Genesee Christian
I'd love to see these 2 teams square off. I love the way that this game could take shape. Both has realistic Breslin Center goals this season in Division 4. Fowler has some terrific individual defenders that becomes an even better team defense. Cali Thelen is a versatile defender that can slide across the lane with ease. Paige Thelen can get big stops in the paint and protect the rim. Katie Spicer is a high energy defender with excellent anticipation. Will that top notch team defense be able to slow down some scorers that can burn out the bulbs on a scoreboard? Haven Chapman can flat out get buckets. She's a high IQ shooter and can attack off the bounce and peel her way through traffic and finish at the rim. Don't forget about Bella Boike too. She's taken her game up a few notches and is one of the rising stars in the class of 2026. And guess what? We could probably flip this whole thing around, as Genesee Christian plays an elite brand of team basketball and Fowler has a lot of offensive options.
