Getting It Done At The Next Level

I've said for years now - MICHIGAN IS A HOT SPOT FOR PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL TALENT. Some of the results and performances at the next level are proving the truth behind this statement. There are Michigan natives playing high level hoops all over the place. We're going to look at some examples of college basketball players from Michigan that are getting it done at the next level.

Keep in mind that this is nowhere near an all inclusive list, just a sample size that caught my eye. She has LCC squad ranked

Kara Bartels (F, Lansing Community College)

I've been telling anyone that would listen about her game for years now. I knew what I saw when she graced the courts at Zeeland West. She has her LCC squad ranked 20th in the recent NJCAA DII rankings. Bartels has been a living and breathing double-double threat in points and rebounds.

Genevieve Decker (F, Indiana Tech)

Decker could always shoot and score in high school. Looks like that transferred to the next level. The former Anchor Bay star is averaging over 12 points per game and shooting over 55% from the field in the process. Decker recently scored her 1000th career college point.

Ellie Droste (G, Grand Valley State University)

Droste has been stacking up the accomplishments. Score 1000 points? Check. How about a GLIAC Player of the Week? Check. First Team All-GLIAC? Check. Top 10 all time scorer at GVSU? Check. We could keep going on about the former Pewamo-Westphalia star, but you get the point.

Anna Fernandez (G, Calvin College)

Fernandez was always able to find a bucket in her high school days at Plymouth Christian Academy. Some things never change. Fernandez is still at it, averaging 13.7 points per game for Calvin. What caught my was her defense at the college level. Fernandez has racked up 27 steals so far this season.

Claire Gregwer (G, Aquinas)

Gregwer had a reputation as a gym rat and a worker in high school at Grandville. That's certainly paying off now at Aquinas. Gregwer was recently named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Emaia O'Brien (G, Detroit Mercy)

I remember calling O'Brien a water bug type of player when she played at Chandler Park Academy. Pesky and will drive you crazy because you can't catch it. A few years later and same old story. She's strill driving opponents crazy and they still can't stop her. O'Brien has been an electric scorer off the bounce.

Hannah Spitzley (G, Western Michigan University)

The Pewamo-Westpahlia native has had a tremendous college basketball career. She hit her 100th career triple, becoming just the 18th ever at Western Michigan to accomplish that feat.
