Oklahoma Softball Adds To Dynasty

Winning a championship is great. At the highest level of college athletics, it's something saved for the 1%. Most athletes, even most of the superstars, will never get to experience an NCAA National Championship. Don't tell that to the Oklahoma softball team though.

Last night Oklahoma finished the night as the national champions. They defeated Florida State by a score of 3-1, completing the sweep

Let's start with the coach. Coach Gasso played softball for California - Long Beach. She coached at Long Beach City College where she put together a record of 161-59-1. Not bad right? Well in 1995 she went to Oklahoma. With the Sooners, she has over 1300 total wins with a winning percentage of .8000. That's staggering. Gasso has led Oklahoma to the Women's College World Series 14 times.

Now let's talk about national championships and dynasties. Gasso and the Sooners have now won 7 national championships. They've won 3 straight national titles and are only the second softball program to ever win 3 consecutive. It gets even better. They've now won 6 in the last 10 years. That's not just a dynasty, that's domination.

You can't have a dynasty without the players to make it happen. Let's start out with the Most Outstanding Player from the Women's College World Series, Jordy Bahl. Bahl is a sophomore pitcher out of Nebraska and threw a shutout in game 1 against Florida State.

Rylie Boone was named to the All-Tournament team. This is the outfielders second straight year with that honor.

Jayda Coleman is another outfielder that was named to the All-Tournament team. She made 2 huge highlight reel defensive plays, keeping homeruns in the park.

Kinzie Hansen was a All-Tournament team catcher for the Sooners. She caught magical games and was a defensive presence behind the plate.

Tiare Jennings, the second baseman, was also named to the Women's College World Season All-Tournament Team. The power hitting infielder has been consistently one of the best in the country.

Can they do it again next year? The way the went after the transfer portal last year says yes. Time will tell if they can make it 4 straight, but it'll sure be hard to pick against them.
